What To Wear in Hawaii: 8 Outfit Ideas

It’s no secret that I’m a huge lover of the beach and all things tropical. I try to visit exotic beaches and tropical forests as often as I can. There’s just something about the lush greenery and salty air that makes me feel so alive.

One of the world’s most beautiful collections of tropical islands are the islands of Hawaii. Famous for its stunning views, gorgeous flowers, and crystal-clear beaches, Hawaii is a popular tourist destination. If you find yourself headed in that direction, as with every trip, you’ll want to bring the perfect wardrobe along with you.

Hawaii’s climate is one of warm, sunny days and cool breezy nights: That’s important to keep in mind when packing for your visit. The right wardrobe is an absolute must when visiting these gorgeous islands.

That’s why I’ve put together this guide on eight outfit ideas for what to wear in Hawaii:

What’s on the Itinerary?

When getting prepped to spend some time in Hawaii, your number one consideration when planning outfits will be what the plans are for the trip. This will determine what kinds of clothing items are must-haves and which are optional.

Consider your itinerary. Are you going to be doing rigorous activities like surfing, horseback riding, or yoga? Will you have formal events to attend? Are you staying at a beach resort or in a town? These are all essential questions to consider when planning your trip.

Consider the Climate

When you plan your outfits for travel to Hawaii, consider what the climate will be like when you arrive there. During Hawaii’s winter, the islands experience their rainy season. This doesn’t have to impact travel, but it might be a good idea to bring a few clothing items for the rain, like a raincoat and rain boots.

For the most part, though, Hawaii is warm and sunny. Breezy dresses, wrap skirts, sandals, and of course, swimsuits are must-haves. (I’ll talk about some of my favorite ways to style my swimsuits with different cover-ups and sun hats, too.)

The Right Shoes Make a Difference

While sandals are the go-to when planning a beach trip, they’re not the only shoes you’ll need. Visiting local shops, going on tours, and hiking are popular activities in Hawaii. If you’re planning to spend time walking, comfortable shoes are a necessity.

Hiking the gorgeous mountains of Hawaii is another beloved activity when visiting the area. Having a solid pair of boots for a light hike through the mountains and forests is a great way to ensure you have comfort without compromising your style.

Bring a pair of shoes fit for a formal event on any vacation. Whether you’re attending a gala, a work event, or simply want to head out for a date night, having a pair of pumps in your suitcase is always a good idea.

8 Outfit Ideas for Hawaii

Handmade Cover-ups

I love a beautifully made handmade cover-up. Macrame cover-ups not only look great but also blend seamlessly with the tropical scenery. I love to pair a macrame cover-up with a bright high-cute bikini for a splash of color.

Flowing Maxi Dresses

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a long, elegant dress whipping at your heels with the saltwater air. A maxi dress, especially a sleeveless one, is ideal for visiting tropical beaches like those of Hawaii.

Wrap Skirts

Wrap skirts are fantastic for days spent in the sun and hopping in and out of water. Wrap skirts can double as a great cover-up. A Hawaii staple outfit of mine is a one-piece swimsuit with a wrap skirt for a casual cool look.

Matching Sets

One of my favorite outfits to bring for a more refined yet still casual look is a matching set. Matching sets are an easy way for your style to look put-together and well-thought-out, when in reality, it was a super convenient way to get dressed!

Colorful and Tropical Bikinis

I love to rock a bright and eye-catching bikini when I visit Hawaii. The bright colors pop against the white sand and crystal-clear water. Bright pastels and vibrant reds are some of my favorite colors in a swimsuit.

Rompers and Jumpsuits

Lastly, I have to mention another of my favorite outfit ideas for Hawaii: rompers and jumpsuits.

If you’re heading out in the cool evening, you may want to opt for a sparkling jumpsuit. If you’re headed to the beach or for some brunch in town, then a romper is an easy way to step up your look without amping up too much effort. If a jumpsuit is not on the table for breezy evenings, opt for a pair of beige pants.

Ultimate Beachwear

In Hawaii, you’re going to need to have a swimsuit on hand at all times. It’s always smart to pack a few, not only for the ability to change up your style but also so you’ll always have a clean, sand-free swimsuit.

I am a huge fan of floppy sun hats. Where better to wear a large sun hat than on the tropical beaches of Hawaii? If you’re down for something more minimal, though, there are still sun hats that can suit you, like a handmade hat with a smaller brim.

Date-Night Apparel

If you’re planning on going to a more refined event when visiting Hawaii, such as a date night, packing an upscale outfit is probably on your list of priorities. An elegant mini or midi dress should do the trick! Paired with some eye-catching pumps, you’ll be sure to be the show-stopper.

Why Visit Hawaii?

Before we start exploring outfit ideas, though, let’s talk a bit more about Hawaii. You may be asking why to visit Hawaii rather than other tropical islands.

Well, there are a number of reasons! Here are two:

Hawaii’s Rich History

For one, Hawaii has a rich and deep history and culture. The islands were settled over 2,000 years ago by Polenysians from the nearby Marquesas Islands. They traveled over 2,000 miles in canoes to settle these islands. Over the years, these people thrived using skills such as farming and fishing.

Native Hawaiians have a respectful and truly beautiful relationship with nature and their islands. This relationship is something they highly value. When I visit, this is something to keep at the top of my mind.

Support Locals When Visiting

Speaking of the locals, there are so many ways you can support them when you visit Hawaii! I find that’s usually my top priority when I visit. I always encourage friends and colleagues to research how you can visit Hawaii sustainably and respectfully. This leaves me feeling good about supporting their economy while also appreciating their land and culture.

Another way to travel ethically is with outfits made from ethical and sustainable materials and sources. Designers and brands that produce their clothing ethically and sustainably are what line my closet and my suitcase.

Heaven in Hawaii

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places on earth, so of course, you’re also wanting to look your best when you visit! From colorful swimsuits to long flowing dresses, there are so many different styles you can sport on these islands. Hopefully, this article leaves you feeling inspired when it comes to your next trip out to the Aloha State!
