Skirts
Perhaps the most classic and timeless article of clothing there is, you can never go wrong with a skirt. Whether you’re headed to a formal event or planning a simple stroll on the beach, you can find a skirt fit for the occasion.
Incorporating a skirt into your ensemble will instantly give you a polished look. Elegant yet classy, skirts are the perfect way to enhance your look with little effort. While there are countless different types of skirts, understanding the basics will help you pick out the right skirt for the occasion.
What Kind of Skirt Silhouettes Are There?
The three main categories that skirts are usually split into are mini, midi, and maxi (from short to long skirts and everything in between).
I love a wide variety of all three and simply can’t pick a favorite! And I haven’t even gotten into fabrics like crochet, faux leather, or linen blends! Then, you factor in detailing — I’m talking side slits, ruffles, and sequins.
There’s simply too much to love, so here is everything you need to know:
Maxi Skirts
Maxi skirts are our longest skirts and reach to the bottom of your ankles. These skirts can be worn casually, like for a day at the beach or to run errands, or can be worn formally, depending on how you style them.
Adding a flowy sweater tucked into your maxi will take your look to the next level during winter, and an eyelet tee just screams “Hello Summer!”
Maxi skirts are also stunning when paired with a matching top. I love the look of a long high-waisted maxi skirt with a matching cropped tank top.
Midi Skirts
Midi skirts land about mid-length up the leg, hence the nickname “midi.” These skirts are usually seen as the most professional of all skirts, with varieties like the pencil skirt and pleated skirts being common office wear. However, midi skirts can be worn anywhere and everywhere.
You can style a midi skirt with any type of blouse. This knee-length option looks fab with a chiffon button-down tucked in, especially in a professional setting.
For a more casual look, we recommend pairing your midi skirt with a fitted shirt or even a crop top. The midi will look fantastic with a striking pair of pumps or your favorite boots. Now is the perfect time to play with print and texture; it’s all about the balance. With a dark denim skirt, try a light, ruched top. With bodycon midi length, try a loose sweatshirt!
Add in a pair of tights to fight any wind chill, and you’ve got an all-weather attire.
Mini Skirts
The shortest variety of skirts is the mini skirt. These skirts fall somewhere above the knee. These skirts are ready for every fun day on your calendar.
For example, a leather skirt would be lovely for a concert, and a mini wrap skirt just evokes the ballerina athleisure vibe at brunch.
Mini skirts are a great style to experiment with. I encourage my friends to try out new styles that are trending, like tennis skirts, contrasting skater skirts, and skorts.
