How To Wear a Jumpsuit Casually: 5 Styling Tips

How To Wear a Jumpsuit Casually: 5 Styling Tips

Have you ever passed a jumpsuit, and although you loved how it looked, you just weren’t sure how you’d practically wear it? Or maybe, you have one sitting in your closet that you want to breathe new life into?

If the answer to either of those questions is yes, or if you simply want some style inspiration for future use, I’ve got solutions for you. I’ve put together the rundown on what jumpsuits are and how to style them casually for everyday wear.

What is a Jumpsuit?

A jumpsuit is an article of full-body clothing that consists of pants attached to a top with varying sleeve lengths.

Jumpsuits were initially invented in the early 20th century as slim garments for parachuters to wear when jumping from planes. However, as the decades passed, they quickly became popular among women, especially after World War II. Now, jumpsuits are a consistent fan favorite, and there are tons of different styles to choose from.

1. Style Your Jumpsuit With Jackets

One way to tailor your jumpsuit would be to add some type of outer layer. Jackets, cardigans, and even layering a sweater are fantastic ways to add flair to an outfit while keeping it casual.

This is also the perfect way to ensure that what may have been a warmer weather jumpsuit (sleeveless or short-sleeved) can now be worn any time of the year.

Moto Jacket

Also referred to as biker jackets, moto jackets are tighter-fitting leather jackets that are or look similar to what motorcyclists wear. A moto jacket like the Kiah in black leather layered over a jumpsuit would be a fab choice. This exclusive garment adds an exciting edge through its texture and zippers but is never overpowering.

Denim Jackets

You can never go wrong with a classic like a denim jacket, especially with the resurgence of 90s fashion that’s becoming so in demand right now. Denim jackets are a perfect way to keep an outfit laid-back, especially paired with typically semi-formal clothing items like dresses or sleek linen jumpsuits.

Cardigans

Another timeless clothing item, cardigans come in so many forms that there are plenty of options to pair with a jumpsuit. Handknit and chunky cardigans are rising in popularity and are a fab way to add a new element while keeping things simple.

Color-blocked cardigans are a fun way to incorporate color, especially if you’re wearing a solid-colored or muted jumpsuit. I love using cardigans to incorporate a fun texture into my everyday wardrobe — practical and trendy.

2. Pair Your Jumpsuit With Casual Shoes

You can keep an outfit looking casual while wearing more formal articles of clothing. This all depends on how you pull together the different aspects of your ensemble. I recommend pairing a jumpsuit with casual shoes if you’re looking to keep things simple.

Sneakers

A pair of good old-fashioned sneakers or tennis shoes will always be a great pair with a jumpsuit, with the bonus of being comfortable as well. I recommend pairing a jumpsuit with sneakers on days when you’ll be on your feet often, like if you’re running errands or maybe on vacation. The classic white sneaker is hotter than ever and easily earns its place at the top of my list.

Sandals

Sandals are one way you can keep your outfit simple and neat while continuing to look great. A classic slip-on sandal or maybe a more intricate version brings a chic flair without too much effort. Lace-up or woven sandals add a level of complexity to your look through texture while keeping things casual.

Wedges

Platform sandals and wedges may or may not be considered casual wear. If you’re used to wearing heels often, they probably fall into the level of streetwear for you. If you’re not, however, you can opt to stick to another shoe.

Or, maybe if you want to incorporate something new in your ensemble, you can experiment with a fun pair of platform wedges.

3. Use Accessories to Take Your Jumpsuit to the Next Level

How you accessorize your jumpsuit plays a key role in curating your personal style. Just like with dressing up an ensemble, your accessories can accent the features of a jumpsuit without making things too formal.

Jewelry

One of the first things that come to mind when I hear “accessories” is jewelry. An effortless way to look like you’ve put thought and care into your getup is with bits and bobbles.

Matching necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are a fantastic way to tie multiple facets of an outfit together. Keep it breezy with natural textures like cotton thread, recycled brass, and delicate beadwork.

Bags

Pairing the right purse or tote with your jumpsuit is also important, particularly if you’re wearing jewelry. Keep in mind where your day’s activities will bring you.

Do you need something larger to carry more things with you? If not, maybe a small purse is a more reliable option. A functional bag is an amazing way to keep your look casual and make your day easier.

Belts

Belts and jumpsuits are truly the perfect pair. Depending on the waistline of your jumpsuits, belts can be a lovely addition.

If the jumpsuit has a hemmed waistline, a belt can be incorporated seamlessly. If not, you can experiment with belts to find the right width and silhouette.

4. Properly Style Your Jumpsuit in Warmer Seasons

Avoid Too Many Layers

Layering is a fun way to add elements to your outfit, but in the warmer seasons of the year, it can be uncomfortable. If you do want to layer, try something small, like a short-sleeved tee under the jumpsuit.

Take Advantage of Athleticwear

Athleticwear and athleisure are fashion staples and for a good reason. Comfortable and cute, these types of clothing are functional as both under and outerwear in the warmer months of the year.

Instead of layering with a shirt, go bold and slip your jumpsuit over a sports bra. This unique parking is award-winning, especially on active and sunny days.

5. Styling Jumpsuits in the Colder Months

Layer Sweaters

I mentioned earlier that you could layer sweaters over your jumpsuit similar to jackets, and this is absolutely viable for styling your jumpsuit in the fall and winter. An oversized or chunky sweater will both keep you warm and trendy.

Experiment With Boots, Tights, and Socks

When it’s cold out, socks and boots might seem like the obvious choice to keep your legs and feet warm, but tights under your jumpsuit are also a fantastic way to keep you warm.

Since handknits are all the rage, try experimenting with outfits by layering your jumpsuit with tights underneath, chunky handknit socks, and some ankle boots.

Layer Cardigans and Jackets

You can keep yourself warm and looking put together yet casual through your outerwear. I even prefer to layer cardigans under thicker coats when it’s especially cold out so that when I get to my destination, I still have a stylish way to keep warm underneath my thick coat.

Then, when you get to your destination, it’s easy to peel off your outermost layer and still be rocking a high-fashion cardigan.

Jump to It

A popular piece of attire, the jumpsuit, is a manageable way to begin an ensemble. How you style a jumpsuit determines how informal or formal an outfit is, and I wanted to consider great ways to style a jumpsuit casually.

Outerwear, shoes, accessories, and more are all the aspects you want to consider when styling a jumpsuit for everyday wear. With this guide, you’ll be feeling confident when wearing your jumpsuit out and about.
