Midi Dresses
An article of clothing that I am always looking for an excuse to wear is a dress. No matter if I’m running out to the store, grabbing coffee at the drive thru, or going out to lunch, I will try and opt for something like a T-shirt dress or a button-down shirt dress.
If it's summer or springtime, I’ll usually throw on a sleeveless sundress or a mini dress with puff sleeves. In the fall or winter, I’ll go for a maxi dress with long sleeves or a sweater dress.
But one of my all-time favorite kinds of dresses is right in between the length of maxi and mini dresses, and it’s the classic midi dress.
Midi Dress
Midi dresses usually hit around the mid-calf or are knee length and are the perfect option for you if you are looking for a dress that’s not too short and not too long.
Midi dresses come in many different materials like chiffon and linen blends; they can be strapless or have a crew neck, square neck, cowl neck, or more; they can come in floral prints and solid colors. Basically, every neckline and fabric type you can dream of.
Midi dresses can be worn as cocktail dresses, casual dresses, and even as a cover-up for your bathing suit.
Casual Midi Dresses
Though they can be worn during any season, I mainly wear my midi dresses in the spring and summertime. In those warmer seasons, I particularly love to wear materials that are breathable and comfy, like linen or cotton.
For a beach day or a casual stroll around the city, I’d go with a linen dress like Ephedra’s Natural Teresa dress. Not only is the material breathable for the summer, but the open back makes the dress even more comfortable.
This best-seller offers a unique high neck twist on the classic V neck midi dress. The draping elevates the typical wrap midi dress so that it can be worn to relax by the shore or paired with a blazer for a day at work.
Another summer dress option I love is a cut-out dress like Ephedra’s Lena Ivory dress. The cut-out silhouette and the flutter sleeves of this dress will give your skin more airflow during the lazy, hazy days of summer.
Another casual, warmer weather option that I love is a midi shirt dress. In the fall and winter, I like to throw on a long sleeve midi dress with thicker material, like a knit midi dress, and wear it on its own or with leggings, depending on the temperature.
Formal Midi Dresses
For a dressy event such as a dinner party or a wedding, I love to opt for bodycon dresses, slip dresses, floral dresses, or anything with sequins.
I love a halter neck dress like the Clare Dress from Geraldine Garcia, which makes for the perfect wedding guest party dress.
Since I’m a sucker for a black dress, something like this Dalida Cotton Dress from Cindy Castro with its tie waist just speaks to me, and I’d wear it to any dressy event. In my opinion, pleated detailing paired with a high-low hem is pure magic.
A floral midi dress with a v-neck like the Megan Sunflower dress would be the perfect summer dress to wear to a baby shower or a graduation party. This tiered midi dress would look amazing paired with some flat sandals.
However, note that while formal midi dresses work for black tie dress codes, for white tie codes, guests might do better with floor-length gowns.
Midi Dresses FAQs
One of my fav things about this garment is the potential for everything. Just like how a vacation seems primed for adventure, midi dresses are ready for every event on your calendar, plus the spontaneous trips that create the best memories.
Midi dresses are timeless pieces that will always be in style. While some may have handy pockets (yes, please), I do cherish the opportunity to show off my collection of purses.
