7 Amazing Ways on How To Style a Skirt
The skirt is perhaps the most classic clothing item there is. Breezy and beautiful, the skirt can be worn so many different ways and for any kind of occasion. It’s no wonder that this article of clothing is so popular.
Because of how trendy skirts are, I wanted to go over some ideas for where and how you can style a skirt. These seven tips will equip you with the guide to styling skirts.
Skirts Throughout History
Before I talk more about how to style skirts, I wanted to point out the historical significance of this garment. Skirts, much like dresses, have been around for thousands of years. Ancient Romans and Greeks loved a tunic, while Ancient Egyptians were fond of the schenti.
However, the type of skirt, specifically in regards to length, flip-flopped over the 20th century, with short skirts going in and out of style. Now, skirts of all lengths and styles are simultaneously trending, which is another reason it’s a good idea to know how to style them.
Popular Types of Skirts Right Now
Maxi
The maxi skirt is the longest type of skirt out there. Typically, maxi skirts are ankle length, although they can be slightly shorter. When maxis are super long, they can be worn with tall heels.
Midi
The midi skirt is a mid-length skirt that ends right at or above the knee. Midi skirts are generally seen as the most practical skirt for a professional setting, as they are modest and functional.
Mini
Mini skirts are the shortest of all three. They end above the knee and can range in length. Some examples of trending mini skirts right now are pleated tennis skirts and skorts, although some might consider the skort (shorts designed to look like a skirt from the front) its own category.
How To Style Your Skirt Based on the Occasion
How you put together your outfit is going to depend on where you’re going. If you’re headed somewhere warm, you might want to opt for a shorter skirt and a breathable top, but if it’s cooler, layers will be your best friend.
I’ve listed some examples of occasions and some of the ways you can style your skirt when you attend them.
Running Errands
When you’re out running errands like stopping by the grocery store or dropping kids off at school, you want an outfit that you feel good in, both mentally and physically. I don’t recommend wearing any skirt that you feel is too short or too flowy if you’re moving around often, especially if there’s a chance it will be a windy day.
Wearing comfortable shoes with your outfit is also important in situations like this. I usually opt for a classic sneaker or a comfortable slide, but if I want to amp my outfit up while still maintaining a functional shoe, I go with something popular like a chunky platform boot. The 90s nostalgia is real right now, and these boots are the perfect way to incorporate that into your look.
Beach Days
Skirts are perfect for beach days or any day you’ll be rocking a swimsuit as they make the ideal cover-up. Something long and flowing, like a maxi skirt, look elegant out by the water and are breezy during a windy day.
If you’re wearing a swimsuit and plan to be in and out of the water, though, I recommend trying out a wrap skirt. These are easy to take on and off, which makes them a functional coverup. Plus, they have excellent island vibes for a day by the water.
A Night Out
I love incorporating a skirt into my lineup when I’m planning to spend a night out, whether I’m just hanging out with friends or going on a date. Complex materials, like leather, are always a good idea. Unique details, like a slit up the side, make for an eye-catching look.
What top I wear depends on the type of skirt I’m wearing. I might opt to pair a longer skirt with a tightly fitted crop top. A mini skirt looks great paired with a flowy top Carolina Escobedo and perhaps a plunging neckline.
Pairing a mini skirt with tights and trendy boots is a great way to complete your getup. Of course, heels are always chic (as long as you’re comfortable spending your night out in them).
Parties and Celebrations
Skirts are the ultimate piece of attire to easily elevate your vibe, especially for more formal occasions. Celebrations, like bridal and baby showers or even simply a birthday party, usually make for a fun reason to dress up. I recommend midi or maxi skirts for more formal occasions.
An elegant maxi skirt is always an enchanting and fabulous way to heighten your look. Paired with an upscale button-down and colorful heels and you have a perfect look to let your loved ones know you’re excited to celebrate them.
Base Your Skirt Around Your Lifestyle
How you style your skirt also depends on what type of lifestyle you live. Do you move around often? Do you work from home or in an office? All of the answers to these questions and more will determine how you decide to wear your skirts.
Active Lifestyles
If you live an active lifestyle but still love to enjoy a skirt, there are quite a few solutions to this. With the rise in popularity of athleticwear and athleisure, the athletic skirt and dress have also seen a spike in fame. As I mentioned earlier, the tennis skirt is back in the mainstream and seems here to stay. You can always pair a comfortable skirt with an athletic top or a simple t-shirt.
Office Worker
If you work in an office or any other type of professional setting, I vote for a chic midi skirt. It elevates your getup while remaining appropriate for a work environment.
A midi skirt pairs incredibly well with so many blouses, but if you’re working in an office, I suggest wearing a flowy yet breathable button-down or a short-sleeved blouse. Add a blazer to your outfit, and you’re work-ready and stylish to boot.
Work From Home
Working from home might sound like you can wear whatever you’d like, but in this virtual world, that’s not always the case. Especially if you’ll attend virtual meetings, you want to maintain an aesthetic that will make you look the part while being comfortable. Functional outfits are key here.
It’s also a good idea to spice up your ensemble for personal motivation. It has been proven that how you dress affects your mood and how you perform at your position. Wearing a comfortable yet cute skirt paired with the Amatl Top will not only make you feel cute, but you may find you feel more confident as an employee.
Dressed To Impress
Because of how versatile the skirt is, there are so many ways to accessorize this article of clothing. On top of that, there are countless occasions on which they can be worn. I wanted to share some of my favorite ways to style skirts.
Basically, every occasion is a golden opportunity to flaunt your new skirt. Go with grace and go with drama in your favorite skirts.
